Why insurance is mandatory

Most residence permit applications require proof of private health insurance as a condition of approval. The policy needs to meet a minimum coverage table set by the Insurance and Private Pension Regulation Authority (SEDDK) and must be issued by a licensed Turkish insurer.

Not the same as travel insurance

Short-term travel insurance policies bought for a holiday generally don't meet the requirement. You need a policy specifically designed to satisfy Turkish residence permit rules, purchased through a licensed local insurer.

What "compliant" means in practice

RequirementWhy it matters
Meets SEDDK minimum coverageInsurers issue policies specifically calibrated to the current minimum table
Full-duration coverageThe policy must run for at least as long as the permit you're requesting — no gaps
Issued by a licensed Turkish insurerForeign or unlicensed policies generally aren't accepted
Premium paid in fullA partial or first-installment-only payment typically isn't sufficient

One policy per person

Every applicant on a residence permit application — including each child on a Family Residence Permit — needs their own compliant policy. There's no "family plan" shortcut that covers multiple people under a single policy for this purpose.

Timing: get this right

Your insurance start date and your requested permit start date should line up closely, and the policy's end date must be no earlier than your requested permit's expiry. If you buy your policy too early relative to your actual application timeline, you can end up with a coverage gap at the far end without realizing it.

Practical tip

Confirm your intended permit duration before buying insurance — don't buy first and figure out duration later. This avoids having to purchase a costly top-up policy to close a gap.

Special cases

  • Applicants over 65 often have different, sometimes more limited, private insurance options — ask about SGK-linked alternatives where you're eligible.
  • Pre-existing conditions — most insurers require a disclosure at application; be upfront, as inaccurate disclosures can affect a policy's validity later.
  • Renewals — your policy needs to be extended or replaced at renewal time too, with no gap from the old policy's expiry.
